WHAT IS Dry Needling?

Dry needling has been used in clinical practice for many years now, and is a treatment technique performed by trained and skilled Perth Chiropractors. The aim of dry needling is to improve muscle function and decrease pain. During the procedure fine acupuncture needles are inserted into specific muscles that have been identified by your Chiropractor, is potentially causing pain and discomfort.

How Does Dry Needling Work?

Whilst there are various explanations as to how Dry Needling works, it should be considered that is likely a combination of mechanical effects, as well as a biochemical response. When sensitive muscle tissue has a needle inserted into it, there is a cascade of reactions, which can be aided by the local twitch response. This cascade of reactions is likely to provide a therapeutic effect, in which it stimulates an inflammatory response and in turn helping to desensitise the muscle tissue.  This in turn reduces muscle tension, and alters the pain response, breaking the pain cycle.

Does Dry Needling Hurt?

As with any therapy, Dry needling can be uncomfortable, however each patient is likely to have a different experience. Generally speaking it would be likely to have a dull ache around the needle insertion site. It is also not uncommon for your Perth Chiropractor to elicit a twitch response during the dry needling procedure. This response can feel like a short lived cramp, and is likely to help reducing tension and discomfort in the muscle tissue being treated.

Whilst many patients that consult with our Perth Chiropractors do not like needles, we have had many patients still able to receive dry needling. The needles used are extremely thin (generally 0.25mm) and many patients will not even feel it when it is first inserted into the target location. And of those patients that do, it is likely they just experience a pin-prick style sensation.

For the patients that see our Perth Chiropractors for dry needling, it is common to experience a dull ache for the following 24-48 hours. If you have any questions or concerns about Dry Needling it would be best to discuss these with your Perth Chiropractor near you.
